But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. (Numbers 14:24).

If there was ever a Bible character that displayed a right attitude or different spirit toward God and His Word, it was Caleb. The words, “a different spirit” can be translated as “another spirit”. Caleb is a good example of faith and courage…….

Caleb’s courage was first displayed after his return from his spying mission in the Promised Land. He was willing to stand for the Lord when everyone else was opposing God’s will. Ten of the spies returned with bad news, stating that the land could not be conquered, however Caleb, with Joshua, reported exactly the opposite. He also said, If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. (Numbers 14:8). Instead of standing with Caleb the unbelievers wanted to kill him, (Numbers 14:10).

Like Caleb, all faithful followers of God must be prepared to face adversity when standing for the truth. There are those who will oppose us before they will submit to God’s will. Do we possess the courage of Caleb? Will we stand with God even if it means standing alone?

The “key” to our understanding of Caleb’s character is found in Numbers 14:24 in the phrase, “a different spirit”. We too must possess a “different” spirit in order to be pleasing and useful to God. Many of the Lord’s people must come to terms with the fact that we are not like the world. Standing for the truth is never popular in modern society, If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. (John 15:19) see also John 17:14; 1 John 3:13. Too many Christians are more concerned about what everyone else thinks than what God thinks.

Due to no fault of his own, Caleb was forced to wander in the wilderness for forty years. He suffered because of the faithlessness of the children of Israel. The steadfastness of Caleb’s commitment to God during those troubling years is a great indication of his character. It is often difficult to stay true to the Lord when others bring undeserved heartache and problems to us. But despite all of this, Caleb never blamed God, instead he continued to trust God and waited for the day when he would be allowed to cross over to the Promised Land.
